Purpose
The Center for Artificial Low Dimensional Electronic Systems (CALDES) at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Pohang, Korea is seeking Postdoctoral Research Associates to conduct research in the fields of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) or angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for novel classes of low dimensional electronic systems such as atomic wires, atomic layers, and 2D topological insulators. These positions will provide exceptional opportunities for the CALDES is a collaborative nanoscience research center supported by the IBS which is a newly established research institute in Korea that aims to brighten the future of humankind through basic-science research.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Perform cross-cutting research collaboration with physicists, synthetic chemists, and materials scientists
- Conduct experiments using various types of ultra high vacuum characterization tools, and STM or ARPES
- Participate in developing instrumentations such as ultra low temperature STM or spin-resolved ARPES
- Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals

Qualifications Required
A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or a closely related science discipline, completion of all degree requirements before starting their appointment is required. The incumbent must possess a strong background in STM or ARPES, ideally with extensive experience in instrumentation. Experience in low temperature experiments as well as a good working knowledge and experience in ultra high vacuum is required. The incumbent must have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and demonstrated ability to interact and work effectively with a multi-disciplinary team. Possession of a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences are required.

Qualifications Desired
A strong background in building low-temperature STM or spin-resolved ARPES is desired. Other valuable experience (AFM, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, ...) for the characterization of low dimensional materials is also desired.

Appointment Period & Salary
The initial appointment is a temporary full-time assignment not to exceed two years, which could be extended once up to five years in total, if adequate progress is achieved. Salary range should be $35,000-50,000/yr. For the applicant who has a postdoctoral experience more than 2 years, higher salary ($45,000-60,000/yr) would be considered upon his/her performance.
